Assingment

The replacement of residental complex was published as a project competition in winter 2021/2022. Bob Gysin und Partner BGP Architekten was invited as a team to develop a design that meets the requirements of a contemporary urban housing developement. The focus was on densification and use of sustainable building materials. The project was awarded 1st place and later came to realization.

Concept

The overall urban development concept creates an identity-forming building pattern that is interlinked with the context, offers integrative transitions and creates references to the city and landscape. A repetitive underlying structure is used to create differentiated building clusters that ensure good structure, high permeability and an integrative silhouette.

The heterogeneous density distribution creates spatial focal points and generous “voids” that can be experienced as a sequence of interconnected open spaces. Some are activated by the provision of commercial premises, kindergarten and communal spaces, while others are used for playing, gardening or as contemplative retreats.

The majority of the buildings have been developed as an efficient “Laubengang” typology, in which all apartment types have a generous spatial impression and are oriented on at least two sides. The simple basic structure offers long-term flexibility and a high diversity of different apartment types with the control rooms and the living/dining rooms arranged in different ways.

The existing RWD high-rise building has great potential for long-term use as a residential building on the upper floors, as the primary structure allows for flexible use with studios to large apartments or duplex units. As a well-known landmark and contemporary witness, a piece of the site's history and identity will be preserved and the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will make a significant contribution to sustainability.
