Many people are against the demolition of Kantonsspital Baden, but there are hardly any concrete alternative proposals. Architect Marco Steinacher has done just that: he has designed a concept with different types of apartments that can accommodate at least 275 residents.

The cantonal hospitals in Baden and Aarau are erecting new buildings. The old buildings are being demolished. Could it be done differently?

The online platform Medinside estimates that 70 new hospitals are to be built across the country between 2016 and 2030 at a cost of CHF 15 billion. Existing buildings from the 1970s no longer meet today's requirements. Instead of renovating, hospitals are usually building new ones. What happens to the old buildings?

The old building of Kantonsspital Baden is to be demolished as soon as the new building is completed. Last Wednesday evening, the Stadtlabor association hosted a discussion about an alternative future.

The 1978 building is an important testimony to the hospital buildings of the 1970s. With its typical attributes and unmistakable character, it stands for the (still unbroken) belief in progress of the time. It is today still a landmark and a symbol of the economic and cultural spirit of optimism of the time. The autonomy of the building shapes the landscape and has become an identity-forming part of the living space around Baden and Dättwil.

The committee “No demolition in advance” is calling on Badener Spital AG and the government council, as representatives of the shareholders, to examine and exhaust all possibilities to give the large building with over 50,000 square meters of floor space a second life cycle of 40 to 50 years. This is in view of the immense need for space for a wide variety of uses and in view of the economic and ecological capital tied up in the property.

The committee “Kein Abbruch auf Vorrat” is primarily made up of private individuals and is politically independent. However, organizations can also join.

The Baden Kantonsspital is currently being rebuilt. The current hospital building from the 1970s is to be demolished once it is operational. Is this still justifiable in view of the urgency of net zero in construction? What alternatives are there for the 50,000 m2 of usable space? What potential does the large property have? The Stadtlabor association and the Historisches Museum Baden invite you to view and discuss visions as part of the “Good Architecture” exhibition.
